One Day in Ahangama, Sri Lanka: Surf & Food

One Perfect Day in Ahangama: Surf, Slow Mornings & Local Flavours
From a breakfast worth waking up for to ocean mornings and an intimate dinner celebrating Sri Lankan cuisine, here's how to spend a day in Ahangama.
Some places are best explored with a plan. Others are best experienced with just enough of one. Ahangama is a little of both.
You can start your morning by the ocean, take your time over breakfast, discover a new stretch of coastline and finish the day around a table filled with local flavours. In between, there's room for a swim, a little exploration and the occasional decision to do absolutely nothing.
Here's how we'd spend 24 hours in Ahangama, the Together way.
06:30 — Catch the first waves at Gas Point
There's something special about starting the day in the ocean.
The air is cooler, the coastline is quieter and the light slowly begins to change as the sun rises over the South Coast. For surfers, it's a pretty good reason to get out of bed.
One of the best things about staying at Together Boutique Villa is that Gas Point is just a five-minute walk away. No tuk-tuk, no complicated plans — just grab your board and head towards the ocean.
Check the conditions before paddling out and make sure the break is suitable for your experience level. Gas Point is a reef break, so it's important to understand the entry and exit points, local conditions and potential hazards. If you're unfamiliar with the spot, ask an experienced local surfer or instructor for advice.
Not a surfer? An early beach walk is just as worthwhile. Enjoy the morning light, watch the waves and experience Ahangama before the day gets going.
Either way, there's no better way to connect with the coast than starting your day by the water.
08:30 — Breakfast at Together
After a morning in the ocean, it's time to come back, dry off and enjoy a proper breakfast.
At Together, breakfast is included in your stay and it's one of the things our guests consistently praise in their reviews.
Take your time over your coffee, enjoy a good meal and ease into the rest of the day. There's no need to search for a café straight after surfing when one of the highlights of the stay is waiting back at the villa.
For us, breakfast is more than a practical detail. It's part of the Together experience: good food, a relaxed atmosphere and the chance to share stories from the morning's surf session.
Our kind of morning: waves first, breakfast afterwards, and absolutely no need to rush.
10:00 — Discover a little of Ahangama
With the surf and breakfast taken care of, it's time to explore.
Ahangama has developed a distinctive character, bringing together surf culture, independent cafés, contemporary food, creative spaces and the everyday rhythms of local life.
Explore a few of the streets, browse independent shops or stop somewhere for a refreshing drink. You don't need a long list of places to visit. Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones you stumble upon along the way.
Keep the plans flexible. The point isn't to fit everything in, but to discover a little more of the place you're visiting.
Ahangama, Sri Lanka: A Guide to the South Coast
13:00 — Slow down by the pool
By early afternoon, the tropical heat is a good reason to take things slowly.
Head back to Together, take a dip in the pool, find a comfortable spot in the shade and order a Tamarind Margarita. A little tangy, a little spicy, refreshingly tropical — spicy enough to keep things interesting, but never too much.
It's the perfect excuse to slow down after a morning in the ocean. Add a good playlist, a few hours of sunshine and absolutely no plans, and you've got the afternoon sorted.
At Together, the pool, shared spaces and relaxed atmosphere give you somewhere to return to between adventures — whether you've spent the morning surfing, discovering the coast or simply enjoying a slower start.
Read a book, catch up with the people you're travelling with or settle in for another round by the pool.
There's no need to make every moment productive. Sometimes, the best part of the day is the part where nothing much happens.
13:00 — Enjoy a relaxed afternoon
By early afternoon, the tropical heat is a good reason to slow down.
Head back to Together, take a dip in the pool, find a comfortable spot in the shade or enjoy a little downtime before the evening.
This is one of the pleasures of spending time in Ahangama: you can explore the destination without feeling that you need to be out all day.
At Together, we believe the stay itself should be part of the journey. The pool, shared spaces and relaxed atmosphere give you somewhere to return to between adventures — whether you've spent the morning surfing, discovering the coast or simply enjoying a slower start.
Read a book, have a coffee, catch up with the people you're traveling with or do nothing at all.
There's no need to make every moment productive.
17:30 — Catch the sunset at Kabalana Beach
One of our favorite ways to end the day in Ahangama is with a sunset at Kabalana Beach.
As the afternoon light softens, head down to the beach, find a comfortable spot and watch the sky change colors over the ocean. It's a beautiful way to experience the South Coast without needing to plan anything elaborate.
Kabalana has a special place in our local routine. It's known for its surf, but you don't need a board to enjoy being here. Sometimes, all you need is the sand beneath your feet, the sound of the waves and a little time to slow down.
Our advice? Arrive with enough time to settle in before sunset, check the day's conditions and enjoy the moment rather than watching the clock.
It's one of those simple experiences that can end up becoming a favorite memory of your time in Ahangama.
19:30 — A taste of Sri Lanka at Kalage
For dinner, we'd send you to Kalage, one of those places that offers more than just a good meal.
Set in a beautifully restored heritage space, Kalage brings Sri Lankan cuisine, local character and contemporary touches together in an intimate setting. It's a chance to discover the island's flavors in a place that feels considered yet relaxed, with an atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer.
Expect the kind of food that invites you to explore Sri Lankan cooking beyond the familiar: fragrant curries, local ingredients and dishes full of character. Add the setting, the music and a good drink, and you have a lovely way to end a day on the South Coast.
It's one of our favorite kinds of recommendation to share with guests: somewhere that feels connected to the place you're visiting, rather than somewhere you could be anywhere in the world.
A little extra, just for Together guests: enjoy 10% off your bill at Kalage when staying with us. Simply mention that you're a Together guest when you arrive and confirm the discount with the team.
A day that started with waves at Gas Point deserves to end around a table like this.
21:30 — Stay in or head out?
After dinner at Kalage, the rest of the evening is yours.
The slow option: head back to Together.
Return to the villa, settle into the tropical atmosphere and enjoy a quieter end to the day. After an early surf, a few hours by the pool and sunset at Kabalana, sometimes the best plan is no plan at all.
The going-out option: discover Ahangama after dark.
If you're still in the mood for a little more, explore Ahangama's evening scene. Depending on the night, you might find a lively bar, music, cocktails or somewhere to meet other travelers and locals. Ask our team for recommendations on what's happening during your stay.
Whether you're ready to switch off or keep the evening going, there's no wrong way to end the day.
One day, your way
An early surf at Gas Point. Breakfast waiting for you at Together. A Tamarind Margarita by the pool. Sunset at Kabalana Beach. Dinner at Kalage, followed by an evening that can be as relaxed or as lively as you like.
That's the beauty of Ahangama: you can fill your day with experiences without having to plan every minute.
And with Together as your base, you get to choose your own rhythm.
