Ahangama, Sri Lanka: A Guide to the South Coast

Main Point
There is a particular feeling to Sri Lanka's south coast. Mornings begins with the sound of the ocean. Coffee turns into a long breakfast. A quick trip to the beach becomes an eftrnoon outside, and dinner plans somehow become the best part of the day.
Ahangama has that feeling in abundance.
Set along Sri Lanka's southern coastline, between Galle and Welligama, Ahangama has grown into a destination for travelers drawn to surfing, thougthul design and a more relaxed way of experiencing a place. It appeals goes beyond any single activity. It's the combination of the ocean, food, local culture and everyday life that makes it worth discovering.
Get to know Ahangama
Ahangama isn't the kind of destination that revolves around one main attraction. It's a collection of experiences spread along the coast and into the quiter streets (as we are) and green inland surrounings.
You'll find surfers heading towards the water early in the morning, small independent business and tropical gardens and places to eat the make you want to stay a little longer.
The town also has a rhythm of its own. The coastline and main road are lively in places, while a short journey inland can bring you into a much quieter landscape of palms, gardens and paddy fields.
Part of the appeal is that you can shape your stay around what you enjoy. And this is not only beautiful, but also unique.
Discover the beaches and surf
For many people, the first introduction to Ahangama is through its surf culture. Yes, it's nice.
The surrounding costline offers a variety of surf breaks, from beach to reef, for surfers with a different levels of experience. 5min one way you have Kabalana, 5 min other way you have Midigama. But the best, is that 5min walking from Together you have Gas Point Surf Break, easy and fun enough for intermediate levels.
The usual south-coast surf season runs broadly from November to end of April, although conditions change throughout the year and from one day to the next. Normal stuff.
But you don't have to surf to enjoy the ocean here. And if you're planning to swim or just lay down in the towel, you'll have plenty of options, the most obvious for us is the Ahangama secret beach, were you can easily go by walk or scooter.
Our tip: start early. The light is beautiful, the day is still cool, and you'll have all the day to enjoy.
Explore the food and coffee scene
One of the reasons Ahangama has become such an appealing place to spend time is its food culture.
Coffee shops, breakfast spots, independent restaurants and relaxes places for a drink have become part of the wider experience of visiting the area. And then there's the seafood.
Sri Lanka relationship with the ocean naturally finds its way onto the table. Fresh fish, prawns, tropical fruit, coconut, lime and local spices offer endless possibilities, from traditional preparations to more contemporary coastal cooking.
At Together, this same philosophy shapes our own food and drink experience: contemporary coastal flavors, seafood, fresh ingredients and cocktails designed to be enjoyed without rushing.
“What impressed me most about was the personal care. They treated my property search as if it were their own, and I ended up with a home that perfectly matches my lifestyle. Truly exceptional service.”
Find your own version of slow living
Not every memorable travel experience needs to involve a new destination or a carefully planned activity.
Sometimes it's the small things that stay with you: a slow breakfast, an afternoon by the pool, the sound of a rain on tropical leaves or a conversation that lasts longer than expeted.
Ahangama lends itself to this kind of travel.
And fo us, that is part of what makes this corner of Sri Lanka special. It's not simply about what you ca see or do. It's about how you feel while you're here.
