Designing a Boutique Stay

Designing a Boutique Stay Around the Way People Want to Live
Good design is about more than how a place looks. It’s about how it works, how it feels, and the little details that make being somewhere new feel effortless.
When designing Together Boutique Villa, we started with a simple challenge: making the most of a limited space without compromising the way we wanted people to experience it.
We wanted the villa to feel connected. A place where the pool, restaurant, bar and shared spaces naturally came together, while still offering the comfort and functionality people need when travelling somewhere far from home.
But we also wanted it to have character. Not just a beautiful setting, but a place with its own architectural language, thoughtful details and a personality you could feel in the spaces around you.
Designing the whole, not just the rooms
With a relatively small plot, every decision mattered. The challenge was to make the different areas work together, creating a sense of openness and connection without sacrificing comfort.
The pool became a natural focal point, with the restaurant and bar contributing to the shared life of the villa. Rather than treating each area as a separate element, we wanted them to feel like parts of the same experience.
At the far end of the pool, a large built-in seat creates another place to pause. Shaded and close to the water, it offers somewhere to relax, spend time together or simply enjoy a quieter moment between swims.
These spaces are designed to be used, not just looked at. They give the villa a natural centre — somewhere guests can come together without needing a plan.
Curves, light and a sense of character
The architecture brings a different layer to the experience.
Curved lines are a defining feature, particularly in the main building. They soften the architecture and give the space a distinctive visual identity. The way the curves meet the light and frame the sky creates moments that feel sculptural without making the building feel overly formal.
The image of the architecture is important to us, but aesthetics were never the only consideration. We wanted the design to have personality while remaining part of a place where people could feel comfortable and at ease.
In the lobby, built-in niches bring design and visual interest into the space, showing how even a relatively small architectural detail can contribute to the character of a building.
For us, good design doesn't need to announce itself. Sometimes, it is simply the reason a space feels right.
Designed as if we were going to stay there ourselves
One of the principles behind Together was to approach the villa as if we were designing it for ourselves.
That meant thinking beyond the obvious things guests expect from a comfortable room. It meant considering the small, practical frustrations that can come with travelling in another country, and finding ways to remove them.
Every room has universal power sockets, so guests don't need to worry about bringing the right plug adapter. There are USB and USB-C charging ports beside the bed, making it easy to charge devices without searching for an available socket or rearranging the room.
These details may not be the first things people notice when they arrive. But they matter when you're settling in, unpacking, charging your phone or getting ready for another day exploring the South Coast.
We believe hospitality is partly about anticipating needs before they become inconveniences. Not every thoughtful decision needs to be visible. Sometimes, the best design is what makes something easier without asking for attention.
The details that make a space personal
Functionality was only one side of the brief. We also wanted the villa to have a personality of its own.
A good example is the pendant lighting in the rooms. Rather than choosing identical, off-the-shelf pieces, we sourced fabrics from a warehouse in Colombo and had the lampshades handmade, each with its own design.
They bring individuality to the rooms and add a more personal layer to the interiors. Each piece is a small expression of the approach we wanted to take throughout Together: considered, distinctive and not overly uniform.
It's a reminder that character doesn't always come from grand gestures. It can come from the material you choose, the way a detail is made or the decision to do something a little differently.
A designer's eye, with real life in mind
Raquel played an important role in shaping this vision.
With a background in interior design and years of experience working in architecture studios, she had a clear idea of the atmosphere and aesthetic she wanted to create. Her eye for detail helped bring consistency to the project, from the architectural forms to the smaller elements that give the interiors their identity.
That combination of visual sensitivity and practical thinking was essential. The intention was never to create a space that looked good at the expense of how it worked. It was to bring those two things together.
Because a place can be beautiful and still feel uncomfortable. It can be perfectly styled and still lack personality. We wanted Together to feel considered, but never precious; distinctive, but easy to live in.
A place to stay, and a place to spend time
Ultimately, we wanted Together to be more than a collection of rooms.
The relationship between the pool, restaurant, bar and shared spaces gives guests different ways to experience the villa throughout the day. You can head out to explore Ahangama, come back for a swim, spend time in the shared areas or retreat to your room when you need some quiet.
The design supports these different rhythms without dictating how anyone should spend their time.
That's what designing around the way people want to live means to us: creating a place that works beautifully, feels personal and leaves room for people to make the experience their own.
The architecture gives Together its shape. The details give it character. And the way people use the space is what brings it to life.
That's the kind of place we wanted to create. And that's what continues to guide the way we think about Together.
